Phlebotomy technicians collect blood samples for laboratory tests, transfusions and donations. They work in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and blood donation centers.
California phlebotomy certificates
California requires phlebotomists to be certified by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services (LFS). There are three levels:
- Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT) – skin puncture blood collection only.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) – skin puncture and venipuncture.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPT II) – skin puncture, venipuncture and arterial puncture.
CPT I requirements for new phlebotomists
For applicants with no on-the-job phlebotomy experience, CDPH lists these steps:
- Complete 40 hours of basic and advanced classroom training in a CDPH-accredited phlebotomy program.
- Complete 40 hours of practical training in a clinical setting, including at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures and observation of arterial punctures.
- Pass a national certification exam from a certifying organization approved by CDPH, such as AMCA, AMT, ASCP, NCCT or NHA.
- Apply to CDPH online and upload your training and exam documents.
Applicants with prior on-the-job experience follow different paths. The certificate must be renewed every year, with continuing education.
Choosing a phlebotomy program
Only training from a CDPH-approved program counts toward state certification, so confirm the approval before you pay. Ask where the clinical hours take place and whether the school arranges them for you.
- Is the school approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), or is the program offered by a public community college?
- Does the program include the clinical or externship hours you will need for certification or licensure?
- What percentage of recent graduates passed the certification exam and found work in the field? BPPE-approved schools must give you a School Performance Fact Sheet before you enroll.
- What is the total cost, including books, uniforms, exam and licensing fees, and what is the refund policy?
