Medical / Clinical Assistant
Medical assistants support doctors and clinics with both patient care and front-office work. California does not license medical assistants, but it does set training rules for tasks such as injections and blood draws.
Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists prepare and dispense medications in retail and hospital pharmacies. In California they must hold a license from the State Board of Pharmacy.
Phlebotomy Technician
Phlebotomists collect blood samples for testing. California is one of the few states that requires phlebotomists to be certified by the state Department of Public Health.
How to choose a training program
A good program should prepare you for the exact certificate or license you need, not just give you a diploma. Before you sign an enrollment agreement, ask:
- Is the school approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), or is the program offered by a public community college?
- Does the program include the clinical or externship hours you will need for certification or licensure?
- What percentage of recent graduates passed the certification exam and found work in the field? BPPE-approved schools must give you a School Performance Fact Sheet before you enroll.
- What is the total cost, including books, uniforms, exam and licensing fees, and what is the refund policy?
